Al Qaeda and the Assassins: An Islamic Historical Brief
Al Qaeda and the Assassins: An Islamic Historical Brief
Among the hills and waddis of Afghanistan, arranged in clandestine cells around the world, purposed to destroying the West are the spirtual descendents of a secret society that once called themselves the Assassins and whose power lasted little more than a hundred years ending with the advance of the Mongols.
The roots of Al Qaeda stretch much farther back than 1980, the year a Muslim organization calling itself Maktab al-Khidamat (Services Office) formed to raise and channel funds and recruit foreign mujahadeen for the war against the Soviets in Afghanistan.
They actually stretch back to the seventh century when a schism between Muslims produced two warring factions the Sunnis and the Shiites. At the heart of this bitterly violent disagreement in the Muslim faith is a disagreement over descent and therefore legitimate authority. The Sunnis believed authority should be handed down to the Prophet's closest and most trusted advisers called caliphs while the Shiites insist that the bloodline must be rigorously sustained and proposed Mohammaed's cousin Ali (and not the caliphs) as the Prophet's successor.
Historically, the wars between Sunnis and Shiites have been much fiercer than anything Christiandom endured during the reformation. Outnumbered ten to one the Shiites were usually defeated. But it was the slaughter of Ali, his grandson Husayn, and every member of his family at the hands of the Umayyads (a caliphate which also invaded Europe threatening it with Islamization but whose advance was fortunately stopped at the Battle of Tours) that provide Shiites with the sense of tragedy and minority persecution that inspire their sense of martyrdom.
In the secrecy needed by Shiites to survive in a Sunni dominated Muslim world, came splinter groups. Two of the most significant were the Twelvers and the Ismailis. From this came a group of Ismailis in Cairo around AD 1000 which founded the Abode of Learning attracting acolytes with promises of secret techniques that would enable believers to carry out divine missions on behalf of Allah. The structure employed at the Abode of Learning became a model by which Muslim secret societies arranged themselves in following centuries.
Instead of a top down pyramid configuration with authority flowing from the top of the pyramid, these societies are cell based arraying themselves in series of concentric circles with the ultimate power residing somewhere in the hub. Circular organizations are not nearly as easily understood or penetrated as pyramid structures are. In addition, the number of circles varies and outsiders are never aware how close they may be to the actual center of power.
As John Reynolds explains in 'Secret Societies: The World's Most Notorious Organizations':
"The circular configuration of the Abode of Learning, copied by religious-based secret societies over the years, began with study groups called Assemblies of Wisdom, designed to discard candidates lacking sufficient dedication.
Successful graduates entered a nine-stage initiation procedure built upon the characteristic circle structure. This initiation process represents a classic method of securing allegiance to a group's cause and building a foundation of unquestioned obedience."
The bottom line was that acolytes were tempted or lured into the organization where they were severly brainwashed. It started with doubts planted about the values and concepts they had been taught to respect all their lives during the first initation stage. Applying false analogies, teachers dismanteled their student's entire belief system and dismissed it.
First stage graduates moved into the second stage where they became convinced of the organization's moral and spiritual transcendence. In the third and fourth stages, they learned the secret revelations and ritual. In the fifth stage, a type of meditation that severly damages the ability of individuals to think for themselves became the goal.
The sixth degree consisted of instruction in analytical and destructive arguments. The seventh degree offered more revelation. The eight and ninth degrees reinforced that everything was fradulent except total servitude to the imams (e.g. leaders of the organization) and that only action taken in response to instructions of these leaders resulted in entrance to paradise after death.
In time, a truly evil man named Hasan discovered and customized the Abode of Learning methodology to gather around loyal acolytes and build what became known as the Assassins or fedayeen.
Hassan-i-Sabah (started the fedayeen otherwise known as the Assassins)
Some of the brainwashing techniques he introduced included drugging young acolytes into unconsciousness and then taking them to specially constructed gardens full of young women where, upon being awakened, they were told that Hasan had mystically transported them to paradise where their every desire for all eternity could be fulfilled. Afterwards, they were drugged back into sleep and carried back to their rooms where they awoke with the kind of faith that makes for a true martyer. A faith that Hasan put to use.
None of the methods used by Hasan (and those who replaced him upon his death) surprise contemporary experts. Psychiatrist Robert Jay Lifton, in his book 'Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism' discusses primary charactersitics used by secret societies today that are as effective today as they were in Hasan's time. First is a charaismatic leaders who becomes the object of worship; second is thought reform (e.g. brainwashing); and third is explotiation by the leader and ruling elite.
After the Mongols destroyed their centers of influence in the thirteenth century, Assassin remanents escaped to India, Iraq, Iran and Syria where they remain today as spliter groups of militant Shiites.
But it was the fidayeen which translates as "one who is ready to sacrifice themselves for a cause," the most extreme and trustworthy followers of Hasan and his successors, that became Islamic fanatics battling enemies of the Prophet.
For them, the promise of eternity in Paradise is the incentive that seems to work even without the persuasion of Hasan's contrived "previews." Though Osama bin Laden is a Sunni, the philosophical justification and organizational structure between Hasan's Assassins and Osma bin Laden's Al Qaeda remains unbroken.

The Christmas Story
"Now it happened in those days, that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. This was the first enrollment made when Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to enroll themselves, everyone to his own city. Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David; to enroll himself with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him as wife, being pregnant.
It happened, while they were there, that the day had come that she should give birth. She brought forth her firstborn son, and she wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn.
There were shepherds in the same country staying in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock. Behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. The angel said to them, "Don't be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people. For there is born to you, this day, in the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. This is the sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth, lying in a feeding trough." Suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army praising God, and saying,
"Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace, good will toward men."
It happened, when the angels went away from them into the sky, that the shepherds said one to another, "Let's go to Bethlehem, now, and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us." They came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby was lying in the feeding trough. When they saw it, they publicized widely the saying which was spoken to them about this child.
All who heard it wondered at the things which were spoken to them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it was told them.
When eight days were fulfilled for the circumcision of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. When the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord"), and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, "A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons."
Behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. He came in the Spirit into the temple. When the parents brought in the child, Jesus, that they might do concerning him according to the custom of the law, then he received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said,
"Now you are releasing your servant, Master, according to your word, in peace; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared before the face of all peoples; a light for revelation to the nations, and the glory of your people Israel."
Joseph and his mother were marveling at the things which were spoken concerning him, and Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary, his mother, "Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which is spoken against. Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."
There was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher (she was of a great age, having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity, and she had been a widow for about eighty-four years), who didn't depart from the temple, worshipping with fastings and petitions night and day. Coming up at that very hour, she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of him to all those who were looking for redemption in Jerusalem.
When they had accomplished all things that were according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth. The child was growing, and was becoming strong in spirit, being filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him." -Luke 2

China Stealing USA Technology and Secrets
China Stealing USA Technology and Secrets
The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission also said in its annual report to lawmakers that aggressive Chinese space programs are allowing Beijing to more effectively target U.S. military forces.
"China is stealing vast amounts of sensitive information from U.S. computer networks," said Larry Wortzel, chairman of the commission set up by Congress in 2000 to advise, investigate and report on U.S.-China issues.
The commission of six Democrats and six Republicans said in the unanimously approved report that China's massive military modernization and its "impressive but disturbing" space and computer warfare capabilities "suggest China is intent on expanding its sphere of control even at the expense of its Asian neighbors and the United States."
The commission recommended that lawmakers provide money for U.S. government programs that would monitor and protect computer networks.
Messages left with the Chinese Embassy in Washington were not immediately returned.
But officials in Beijing have responded to past reports of this kind by saying that China does not try to undermine other countries' interests and seeks strong ties with the United States.
The report comes two months before President-elect Barack Obama takes office. The Democratic Obama administration probably will continue the Republican Bush administration's efforts to work with and encourage China, a veto-holding member of the U.N. Security Council that the United States needs in nuclear confrontations with Iran and North Korea.
During the campaign for president, then-candidate Obama said that "China is rising, and it's not going away," adding that Beijing is "neither our enemy nor our friend; they're competitors."
In the commission's report, military strategist Wang Huacheng is quoted as calling U.S. dependence on space assets and information technology its "soft ribs."
China's space program is "steadily increasing the vulnerability of U.S. assets," the report said. For instance, improvements in satellite imagery allow China to locate U.S. carrier battle groups more accurately, faster and from farther away.
People's Liberation Army officer and author Cai Fengzhen is quoted as saying that the "area above ground, airspace and outer space are inseparable and integrated. They are the strategic commanding height of modern informationalized warfare."
"If this becomes Chinese policy," the report said, "it could set the stage for conflict with the United States and other nations that expect the right of passage for their spacecraft."
The commission also criticized China for violating commitments to avoid trade-distorting measures, adopting new laws that may restrict foreign access to China's markets and keeping its currency undervalued.
It recommended that Congress enact legislation to respond to China's currency manipulation and create enforceable disclosure requirements on investments in the United States for foreign sovereign wealth funds and other foreign state-controlled companies."

The problem looks to be aggrevated due to senior-level officials in the intelligence community bracing for an Obama presidency expecting an end to big budgets, unquestioning support, a new risk-averse environment, and possible loyalty probes initally at least.
As Philip Giraldi, a former CIA Officer, explains in 'The American Conservative':
"Many senior officers are reportedly preparing to resign and take lucrative positions with contractors like Booz-Allen and SAIC, which will exacerbate the most serious problem in the intelligence community--the hemorrahaging of experienced officers."

Republican Party Reform: It's Now or Never
Republican Party Reform: It's Now or Never
It was interesting to watch nominal Republicans abandon the GOP, moderate Republicans cross over and vote for Obama, and life long Republicans for the first time ever declare themselves independents and vote for independent candidates (though some Republicans whom declared independent for the first time at the last minute did vote for McCain). The latter included a slice of the religious right that finally tired of neo-conservative policies and voted for Chuck Baldwin and his platform of traditional conservatism. We believe this slice will grow if the GOP fails to reform.
Despite the Republican Party's concerted attempts at bridge building: 96% of blacks voters chose Obama, 66% of latino voters chose Obama, and 64% of asian voters chose Obama.
In our opinion, the GOP has been living in a dream world surrounded by a matrix they themselves created. A matrix of special and foreign interests, wealthy elitists, multinational free trade corporate representatives, etc... all couched in a new world order. And they did this while paying lip service to Judeo-Christian traditional values they never practiced. It's time for the GOP to take the red pill and awake into the real world.
They can start with realizing that multinational corporations do not vote, encouraging the exodus of American jobs en masse does not win votes, fighting wars of empire instead of building a better country results in undesirable consequences, and flooding the country with tens of millions upon tens of millions of immigrants with zero enculturation in a single generation to exploit for cheap labor who then side with the Democrats, as they did this election, by a 2 to 1 ratio is not a good election strategy (e.g. amnesty creates Democrats).
For it was the Republicans who pushed through the Bracero Act in 1942 and a Republican controlled Congress that approved the Hart-Cellar Act of 1965 and all sorts of like minded legislation since so as to exploit near slave labor for the short term profit of their special interests displacing tens of millions of American citizen workers in the process. They then joined with the Democratic amnesty drives to ensure their cheap supply of labor was made permanent.
But the Republicans acted foolishly in thinking they could flood the country with 41 million legal latinos and up to 20 million illegal latinos since 1930 with almost zero enculturation and transform the material aggregate of them into Republican voters.
Adding insult to injury, the GOP then ignored the American citizen workers they displaced in favor of attempting to convert the immigrant laborers into Republicans. But the Democrats got to them long ago with their socialized freebies and codependent philosophy. How could the GOP think those voters would NOT turn on them is a mystery to us? They certainly did in more than a 2 to 1 ratio this election.
And the conservative blacks turned on them enmasse as well. Thomas Sowell aside, states posted amazing Democrat turnouts of blacks with some states posting 100% of all black voters casting their vote for Obama. 100%!
The result: a humbling defeat for the Republicans who flooded the country with new Democrats for short term profit throwing them from power well ignoring the wishes for free trade reform and immigration reform from their traditional base.
In the process of mismanaging the GOP, life long Republicans were alienated and either simply crossed over and voted for Obama or turned independent choosing to vote for an independent candidate that reflected a more authentic conservatism than neo-conservatism. The GOP never even noticed their departure.
But they aren’t traitors. It was the GOP that left them. Like Reagan once announced to the Democratic leadership, "I didn't leave the Democratic party, the party left me."
Now is the time for upheaval in the Republican party. Now is the time for reform. The GOP should replace its leadership with authentic conservatives that will move away from failed neo-conservative policies once again aligning themselves with the national interest and the interest of the conservative American citizen worker.
Yet disturbingly, the rumors we hear are that GOP leadership is considering moving the Republican party further left abandoning authentic conservatism in exchange for greater neo-conservative policies. This is exactly the opposite direction they need follow lest they end as Captain Smith did. You remember him, of course, as the captain that guided the Titanic to its watery grave taking down a lot of good people in the process.
Authentic conservatism is the right direction. Only then will the hemmoraging stop and conservatives return to the fold from which they are leaving. But therein lies both the promise and the problem. Will Republican leadership simply bide their time unrepentant waiting for their chance to pick up where they left off and continue running the country into the ground at even a quicker clip or will upheaval occur in their ranks finally making them a transformed authentic conservative party worth voting for again? Only time will tell.

A Broken Public Education System
A Broken Public Education System
Yet despite the enormous sums of money spent and the low student to teacher ratio, in 2007 the Los Angeles Unified School District's high school dropout rate officially was 33.6 percent with the mayor of Los Angeles stating the official droput rate is understated. Mayor Villaraigosa said, "We know it's 50 to 60 percent and in some parts of the city 65 or 70 percent."
Enrollment breakdown by ethnic group is approximately 73% Hispanic, 11% African-American, 9% non-Hispanic White, 4% Asian, 2% Filipino, and American Indian and Pacific Islanders together amount to less than 1% of the LAUSD enrolled student body.
While not politically correct or popular to state, it should be obvious to even the casual observer that the majority of new recruits feeding Los Angeles based gangs are hispanic and black LAUSD dropouts. Here's what it looks like:
Imagine more than a hundred thousand young dropouts per each four year cycle being loosed in your city with such a generational institutionalized gang problem environment as exists in Los Angeles.
A city that used to be the crowning jewel of public education in the SouthWest producing students that contributed heavily to winning the space race, winning the cold war, developing next generation engineering methods and building quality infrastructure we still enjoy today, innovating the last technological and information revolution, etc...
In our father’s day, high school students in Los Angeles gained measurable aptitudes in higher math, engineering, science, and pre-college English that led to real competency as well as learning vocational trades like mechanics, electrical, and automotive courses preparing them for both the work force and college. And they did it for less than we spend today with a much lower dropout rate.
Critically, we instilled in them traditional Judeo-Christian American values that led to an internalized sense of ultimate morality, a solid work ethic, a sense of belonging to a common American culture, all the while empowering them with a high level of education and challenging them to take responsibility and do their part in making this country something they could be proud of. That's what we used to do and it worked.
Today... let's face it: public education isn't bringing the desired results. We are simply spending enormous amounts of time and money to turn kids into entitled disparate liberals encouraging them to follow their carnal tendencies while we cosign low achievement. As a result, those who graduate do so with substandard skills and many simply drop out and find their way into a life of gangsterism creating further enormous fiscal and cultural problems that last a lifetime repeating in greater numbers each generational cycle.
Nationwide, more than one of of every thirty-two adults is already in prison, jail, or on probation/parole. Of course, this doesn't count the number of men and women that have already done their time and are currently out on the street between incarcerations or reformed and checking the box yes for "have you ever been convicted of a crime" on those job applications they rarely hear back from.
What we have today is a system the elitists created. A system they overcharge us for that brings little in the way of desirable results. They ask us to pay for the demise of our society with the logic that it’s good for us when the only thing it’s good for is their careers and ideology. And their only solution is to attempt to shame us in giving them more of our money when they should be ashamed for the undesirable results the enormous sums we already give them produces. Especially in light of the excellent results that once existed.
The truth, in our opinion, is that if we gave them 40 billion dollars instead of 20 billion dollars it would not turn Los Angeles public education around. We would continue to see an unacceptable high dropout rate with many joining gangs, a substandard education for those that do graduate, and a new generation arising ready to repeat the cycle.
Let's do a compare and contrast to put this into perspective. The Des Moines Public School District in 2007-2008 had 30,683 students, a budget of $397.7 million, and a total staff (everyone) of 4,904 for a ratio of $12,961.57 per student and 13.5 students per teacher.
The makeup of Des Moines is about 82.3% non-Hispanic White, 8.07% African American, 6.61% Hispanic, 3.50% Asian, 0.35% Native American, 0.05% Pacific Islander amd 3.52% from other races. Des Moines had a recent overall graduation rate of 84%.
Do you see a difference? The difference is much better results are realized for far less money. Yet even Des Moines now faces the same future challenges as their demographic changes.
How did Los Angeles go from a crowning jewel of public education to a dismal case study in what not to do. Why did California fall from being the number one state for public education to lowly number forty-seven becoming in the process the number one incarcerator of youth and adults?
The problem isn't one of money dear readers. It never was! The problem goes much deeper than that. At the heart of it is the worldview, belief system, culture, value system, and ethical construct that we failed to impart to a mass influx of poor immigrants whom we made Americans with our amnesty drives never stopping to consider that we were simply rubber stamping tens of millions of Americans-In-Name-Only (AINO) with almost zero enculturation or commitment to a right conception of what an American should be and what it takes to become one. And that dear readers is, in fact, the real problem
We effectively devalued American citizenship to simply a plain piece of paper that allows one to legally live on an area of soil and work.
The country's desire for cheap labor over American workers (which really begun long before the Republican sponsored Bracero Act of 1942 which legalized it) overrode common sense. The Democrats took advantage of the opportunity pushing social welfare to bring the new voters over to their side. Now government is broke, we are in a recession, and left with the bill. Know that it is going to be a steep one to pay.
William Buckley once commented that we really should be able to discuss these issues (e.g. the proper management of our country) without having to suffer being called Un-American.
Consider that the total number of Mexicans in the USA in 1930 were 1,422,533 out of a population of 122,775,046 making the percentage of Mexicans here 1.16% of the total US population.
Today, the official population of Hispanics and Latinos is 15.1% of the total United States population or 45.4 million people with somewhere between 12 million to 20 million illegal immigrants on top of that making them the majority population in California and Texas and the second largest minority population in the United States overall.
This number is very possibly understated as some Hispanic/Latino voters simply declare non-hispanic white on the census skewing both the Hispanic/Latino count as well as the white count. As a result, the 2010 census will be changed in an attempt to counteract this discrepancy.
The bottom line is that we allowed in many tens of millions of poor immigrants in a single generation to exploit for cheap labor without transforming them into real Americans. We gave them little more than amnesty and a social security number making Americans-In-Name-Only. And our country is reaping the consequences.
It would be remiss for us not to mention that we failed blacks in this regard as well. As equality began to occur from the 1920's onward (with the lifting of housing zone ordinances that kept blacks from moving outside a specific area), we missed a real opportunity to finally include them fully in our American way of life imparting to them the American worldview, belief system, culture, values, ethics, and responsibility that made this country the de facto world standard. And today many have simply rejected our culture engaging a lifestyle of gangsterism and Anti-Americanism.
In our opinion, any real solution would require a complete culture shift away from what we are doing and back to what works and did work before; however, this time making it all-inclusive for all Americans.
As for immigration, it needs to be fixed. Chain migration and illegal immigration need to end. Legal immigration needs to be reset back to conservative norms with a time out period implemented to provide the time necessary to fix our broken immigration system. Cheap amnesty citizenship must be replaced with citizenship programs that creates more than Americans-In-Name-Only and hiring illegals needs to end.
The public education system, our culture, and our economy are all due for a massive overhaul. Simply throwing money at the problems won't fix them.
But as desperately needed as a culture shift back to what works is, we see no evidence that it is going to occur. Only a cry for more money will be heard that will never resolve this situation and a cry for amnesty that will make the problem much worse will occur.
So while it is probably too late for the Los Angeles Unified School District to learn from the good citizens of Des Moines, it is probably not to late for the good citizens of Des Moines to take careful note and avoid repeating the scenario that led to Los Angeles's situation. We hope they do.

Consider that the total number of Mexicans in the USA in 1930 were 1,422,533 out of a population of 122,775,046 making the percentage of Mexicans here 1.16% of the total US population. Today, the official population of Hispanics and Latinos is 15.1% of the total United States population or 45.4 million people with somewhere between 12 million to 20 million illegal immigrants as well becoming the majority population in California and Texas and the second largest minority population in the United States overall.
And society reaps the consequences.
And the results of not doing that speak for themselves in many ways today here.
In our opinion, any real solution would require a complete culture shift away from what we are doing and back to what works and did work before. As for immigration, it would have to be fixed. Chain migration and illegal immigration needs to end. Legal immigration needs to be reset back to conservative norms with a time out period implemented to provide the time necessary to fix the broken system. Cheap amnesty citizenship must be replaced with citizenship programs that creates more than Americans-In-Name-Only. We think citizenship should be written on the heart not just a piece of paper.
But as desperately needed as a culture shift back to what works is, we see no evidence that it is going to occur. Only a cry for more money will be heard that will never resolve this situation.
So while it is probably too late for the Los Angeles Unified School District to learn from the good citizens of Des Moines, it is probably not to late for the good citizens of Des Moines to take careful note and avoid repeating the scenario that led to Los Angeles's situation. We hope they do.
